ROCK & SHOALS
WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHS BY RINNE ALLEN
at the end of a road in an unassuming subdivision in athens, a trail leads through some
woods to a rare granite rock outcrop. in the early spring, the rock is
covered in blankets of wildflowers- elf orpine, wild garlic, native spiderwort,
|
mosses, lichens, and others co-mingle in the carpet.
the rock outcropping is one of just a few in the piedmont area of georgia,
formed by magma millions of years ago. about 6 acres of exposed granite undulate
by the edge of the woods, punctuated only by gnarled cedar trees and rivulets of
water. on this particular day, we wandered around, took some photos,
looked at the tiny petals through our microscope,
and took a nap in the sun.
